I'm concerned. I don't think this will end well.

Call me a guy, but I don't see the problem.

Isn't this just like when various authors write sequels, prequels, and spinoffs using characters from Jane Austen? They get published, maybe read, maybe even liked, but they don't diminish the original works.

Heck, even Scarlett, that authorized sequel to Gone With the Wind, spawned controversy and a mini-series, but probably only made readers return to Margaret Mitchell.

I figure literary critics will just do some side-by-side comparisons, and maybe book buyers will be tempted to do the same.

I think the problem I see is that you're taking an inherently optimistic CHILDREN's lit. character and putting her in the darkest time of her life (to see how she copes?) I mean, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with watching Anne get abused for 10 years.

It was bad enough just putting up with Josie Pye.

And yes, you are a guy. This is not a post for all audiences...

I can't even come up with a possible comparison that would help.

I'd like to have a conversation with the powers that be to ask "Dude, WHY??!?!?!"
