More Pottering

So, happy birthday to me. My main present was a nasty cold. Still, I managed to get out to see the opening of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with a bunch of friends. Talk about making me feel old. Spoilers in comments. Let the discussion begin.

I was worried about this one since they had so much to cut out. Even with the movie being over 2.5 hours I didn't know how it would work.

I was warned by a friend who went to the midnight showing that a lot was not faithful to the book (no house elf...harry not blamed for the first dark mark, etc.)

I was actually ok with any omissions. I mean, most of it seemed to serve the movie as far as pace and storytelling goes. The only issues I had were in the acutal final challenge. The maze wasn't very clear what was going on. But it looked cool.

Really it was all about the ball. How cool was that? The kids are growing up and I thought it made for the funniest movie of the four so far.

Overall, I loved it! Your thoughts?

I've seen it, but my reviews are not uniformly positive. I think Mike Newell did the viewers a disservice by slightly fleshing out Neville's backstory (i.e. showing him freeze up in the unforgivable curse scene) but not trying to explain it. (I know that the full truth comes out in book 5, but Harry learns a little from the pensieve in book 4.) That said, I appreciated more screen time for Neville and the Weasley twins.

I also had some casting issues, but I'd rather discuss than lay it all out. (I can do that, and might, in my blog.)
