Is this revenge for my cruel non-use of Johnny Depp last week?
I see what you mean by red herrings. This is tricky. Some DUCK stuff, some HOWARD stuff, maybe even some JACK stuff. And, disturbingly, I'm really not seeing how the Marx Brothers image (the center square!) fits here.
Top row: PIRATES Middle row: FOUR Bottom row: AVIATION
Left column: EYEWEAR Middle column: Right column: BIRDS? (Sparrow, penguin, and is the airplane named for a bird? I can't identify it.)
159 diagonal: 357 diagonal: ACTORS? (Pictures 3 and 7 are Best Actor nominees, but...)
I'll still try the wordless approach, but as a solver, I think I miss the words. And "Pic-Tac-Two": hee.
Well, it's almost 6am here, and I'm headed to work later this morning, so I won't be able to join in the back and forth. But here's my opening salvo, admittedly fired broadly...
Top Row: PIRATES Middle Row: BLACK AND WHITE, or FOUR Bottom Row: AVIATION
Left Column: EYEWEAR Middle Column: HEADWEAR Right Column: CLOUDS
It looks like we're thinking along the same lines. I also thought of DUCK, but without knowing who is in Picture 2, I didn't want to guess it. I'm also not entirely sure that the movie is Duck Soup.
Top row: PIRATES Middle row: FOUR Bottom row: you are quite close. Let's just say I wished I could find a picture for #8 where he was wearing a different non-flight related hat.
Left column: EYEWEAR Middle column: HEADWEAR or HATS Right column: BIRDS (yes, and the name of the aircraftmatters both to this column and the diagonal...let #7 help you)
So, the right column is BIRDS (Sparrow, penguins, Spruce Goose). If the bottom row isn't AVIATION, then maybe HOWARD HUGHES? (The Aviator, Howard, Spruce Goose)
Still at a loss on the 159 diagonal, if it's not FOUR or BIRD related. Maybe DREAM? (duck with nightcap, dream sequence, Hughes' dream)
The more I look at that center image, the more I think Groucho Marx looks like Sacha Baron Cohen.
YAY!!! This was actually my starting theme. My jumping off point. Funny that it was the one that took the longest.
I must say that I was working on this puzzle with different pictures: A poster for Duck Soup that said "The 4 Marx Brothers", A Spruce Goose poster, a graphic for "4 calling birds". But the decision to aim for wordless was a good one.
Nice work. I just posted another 3D puzzle that's far from wordless. In fact, you might say it's quite wordful. Or, it's what we teachers call "text rich." But the wordless wonder is quite a feat!

Bottom Row: AVIATION
Left Column: EYEWEAR
Middle Column: HEADWEAR
Right Column: CLOUDS
Slash: MOVIES
Backslash: WINGS
I'm sure Neel can fill in the ones I got wrong.

Unless Neel beats me to it, that is.

Maybe it's Horse Feathers? But I don't think that helps either.
HEADWEAR for the middle column makes sense. Don't know about CLOUDS; Depp's picture is more of a "Fetch me that horizon" sort of thing.

HOWARD HUGHES is correct.
Oh you are sooooooo close on the last one. Bill is the closest...

159 diagonal: FLIGHTLESS? (ducks, Horse Feathers, failed Spruce Goose)

Wrong movie. And, this will totally give it away, this diagonal has something in common with your difficult diagonal in your last puzzle.

Oh, that's magnificent.
DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE

Well done, both of you. Even if I had "ducks, Duck Soup, Spruce Goose" running in my head, I still wouldn't have put it together.
So, will this be a weekly event?

When inspiration hits, there will be more.
